The Sun Library: By the numbers
For most of The Sun’s history, a behind- the- scenes team has catalogued and archived today’s stories and photos for reference and repurposing, and provided information for today’s print and digital coverage. The results of their work: • 3 million articles • 1.7 million clippings on microfi che, 1930s- 1987 • 1.2 million articles in Fpinfomart database, 1987- today • 1.8 million photographs • 1 million photographs on negatives, 1960s- 1994 • 540,000 photo prints, 1940s- 1994 • 288,000 digital images, 1994- today • 31,750 customers served through the library’s INFOLINE service. Since 1992, the Library has provided Sun photos, pages and articles to readers and permissions to other media to use our photos and articles. • 3,120 requests for information from The Sun newsroom in 2011, including statistics, property ownership, court records and fact checking. In the 1970s, predigital era, there were 10 times the number of library requests from Sun staff .
