A ‘ pretty’ memory, from 90 years ago
Those of my generation were in the habit of keeping a scrapbook. Mine is in a rather tattered state since it goes back over 90 years.
One of the first pages is dated “Aug. 20, 1922.”
The headline reads: “Prize- winners in The Sun’s Prettiest Child Contest.” Pictured below are five children along with the “verdict.”
First prize — a tie between Violet Aitken and Margaret Aitken.” Named are my sister and I. Of course my parents were very proud. However, it was the photographer George Wadds, not my parents, who entered the photographs.
This was my first appearance in The Sun newspaper, but not the last.
“Around the Clock with the White Collar Girl” appeared in 1941.
I was honoured again on Nov. 22, 2003, “A Cuppa Tea in Canada draws a link between Cultures.”
Happy Birthday. Margaret F. Smith Special to The Sun
