Police yet to identify Abbotsford homicide victim

- Mike Hager, Vancouver Sun

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has announced the man found dead in a muddy Abbotsford field Sunday morning is the city’s second homicide of the year.

The man, who appears to be in his 20s, has not been identified. Investigators hope an autopsy performed today will help to uncover his identity and the cause of his death, according to a news release. “It is too early to say whether this is gangrelated or a targeted killing. At this point the priority is to identify the deceased and confirm the cause of death so as to move the investigation forward,” IHIT spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in the release.

The body was discovered by a man out for a Sunday drive. The man saw the body lying 10 metres off of Farmer Road in a muddy field near the U. S. border.

Abbotsford police were called around 9: 20 a. m. Due to the muddy conditions, they took their time before ruling it a suspicious death and calling in IHIT, police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said.

“On initial observation, certainly it’s suspicious for a person to be 10 metres off a roadway in the middle of a farm field and be dead,’ Macdonald told The Sun Sunday morning. “But we don’t have any definitive signs that, ‘ Okay, this is a heart attack or homicide.’ ”
