RULE BREAKERS
Make a rebellious statement with a playful approach
From bling to bags, accessories that make a maverick statement. »
Anote of warning about this season’s accessories: There are no rules. You can pile on your bracelets à la Chriz Benz, go monumentally mod with some chic little Marni- style numbers, hark back to the golden age of jazz with some Great Gatsby- inspired Ralf Lauren delicacy, and grab yourself a Celine- style colour satchel. After all, you’re going to need somewhere to keep your bad girl’s shopping list.
Holt Renfrew is at the very top of every bad girl’s shopping list: “The key trend in jewelry is to layer it up, with big stacks of bangles, charm bracelets and cuffs all worn together,” says Pauline Ho, personal shopper at the Vancouver store.
“We have an amazing range, with amazing gemstones in pastel hues from David Yurman, John Hardy, Antonini and Canadian jewelry designer Anzie.”
Meanwhile, statement necklaces are luring rule- breakers to Aldo, where rose gold can be seen everywhere. “Vintage inspired button earrings are important, while cuff bracelets with tribal- inspired details are a must,” says Vanessa Savarese of Aldo.
Wild, untamed colours exude in all their rebellious glory at Banana Republic, but the collection also pays its respects to the current Daisy Buchanan craze, as Victoria Kirk of Gap Inc., explains: “Pendant necklaces offer a more streamlined approach to accessorizing and pretty cluster earrings sparkle with simple sophistication.”
Rebels who want to bag themselves a bad girl bag this season can choose from the smallest envelope clutch to the biggest and boldest tote. The sensible little black bag has no business adorning any self- respecting fashion rebel’s shoulder this season.
“There are bright and colourful selections from Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch, as well as exquisite ladylike bags from Valentino and Lanvin,” adds Ho. “The hand- held satchel is also well represented across all price points.”
At Old Navy and Banana Republic, totes have also been updated with bold colour- blocking: “They are perfect for work essentials like a laptop, but also great for weekend day- tripping in style,” adds Kirk.
“Sophisticated and feminine, the clutch also continues to enjoy the spotlight this spring. Available in neutrals and brights, women are carrying it in a tote by day and using it to transform for desk- to- dinner engagements by night.”
And, let’s face it, what bad girl doesn’t love a bag that can take them from work- time to playtime in one fell swoop?
