‘ Extraordinary role models’ include actor, poet, dancers, composer, painter and weaver
The City of Vancouver is marking today’s International Women’s Day with a free public reception for its 2012 Remarkable Women poster honorees.
Posters of the female artists from diverse cultural backgrounds are on display in community centres, libraries, schools and other public buildings.
The reception will take place at 6 p. m. in the Creekside Community Recreation Centre, 1 Athletes Way.
“The women we are honouring are extraordinary role models and an inspiration to everyone in Vancouver,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a news release. “The city is proud to recognize remarkable women in our communities in this way as we continue to strive for gender equality and to enhance civic participation for women and girls.”
Park board chair Constance Barnes said she was “thrilled that on International Women’s Day we are celebrating the artistic contributions that local women make to Vancouver’s vibrant cultural landscape.”
The artists depicted on the posters are:
• Charlene Aleck, TsleilWatuth actor and performer. • Kate Braid, poet and writer. • Jan Derbyshire, performer, playwright and comedian.
• Sharon Kallis, environmental artist.
• Lorita Leung and Jessica Jone , Chinese dance artists.
• Sylvi Maccormac, musician, composer, and soundscape artist.
• Paromita Naidu, Indian classical dancer and fashion designer.
• Marina Szijarto, visual and celebration artist.
• Jan Wade, painter and visual artist.
• Jin- me Yoon, visual artist who uses photo and videobased installations.
• Susan Point, Kelly Cannell and Rhea Guerin, Coast Salish artists from Musqueam Nation.
• Tracy Williams, weaver from Squamish Nation.
