Banana Republic embraces California cool patterns

- BY KAREN GRAM kgram@ vancouversun. com

Banana Republic is not exactly forsaking its successful Mad Men theme, but this summer the brand is letting loose with a capsule collection by Trina Turk, diva of California’s ’ 60s style love- in patterns.

Turk’s California esthetic appealed to Banana Republic’s creative director Simon Kneen who wanted to bring the cool vibe of Palm Springs to Banana Republic’s summer collection. To that end, Turk created a collection around the theme of “cocktails by the pool.”

This is no Madison Avenue office dress collection, but Banana Republic spokeswoman Tara Wickwire said the Mad Men designs will return because they work so well with the brand’s work focus. But now it’s time to relax by the pool or on the patio and this collection will be wonderful for that. It ranges from flirty dresses to printed tunics, swim suits, floppy hats and plush beach towels. Turk took a few moments to answer a few of our questions about the collaboration.

Why did you collaborate with Banana Republic?

One of the reasons that Banana Republic approached us about a collaboration is because we are not afraid of print or colour and they were looking for these qualities for their summer collection. I am continuously inspired by Southern California, particularly the resort and poolside lifestyle of the desert, so Simon and I decided early on that the Palm Springs ‘ cocktails by the pool’ lifestyle would be our key inspiration for the colours, styles and prints.

What is your favourite piece or pieces?

Simon and I identified five iconic Trina Turk prints in the right mix of pieces and styles for the Banana Republic customer. My personal favourite piece is the Pisces print dress because I can imagine it’s perfect for drinking a cocktail by the pool or hitting the town for a summer stroll.

Will you be doing more collaborations in the future?

I’m definitely open to more collaborations. The possibilities and potential partners are endless!

Do you think everyone can or should wear patterns?

Of course! If you feel confident wearing patterns, then I say go for it! Colour, print and patterns have become synonymous with the Trina Turk brand and we wanted make sure we offered this to Banana Republic clients.
