I ’ ve driven past the race track at Ashcroft for almost 20 years en route to my fatherinlaw’s cabin in Clinton, but only attended races there a handful of times.

That’s why I’m really looking forward to this weekend’s 25th Annual Langley Loafers OldTime drags and the StraightAxle Shootout at the Ashcroft facility.

Hardcore race fan Steve Chase has been active in promoting the straight axle- style of “Gassers” from the drag racing glory days of the mid-’ 60s to early ’ 70s, and they will put on a great show this weekend.

The Langley Loafers goes back to April 1957 with the original objective to impart a favourable image of hot rodding to the public by driving modified cars in a safe and responsible manner. Members regularly participated in parades and fairs and held fundraising car washes for local charities. Impromptu “Gypsy Runs” would find a number of members heading off to the beaches of the Okanagan Valley and many members took part in drag racing, first at Abbotsford Airport and at and Washington State tracks before Mission opened. A few raced oval tracks and even competed at the old Westwood roadcourse.

The club has been putting on the races at Ashcroft for 25 years and more recently at Mission Raceway park and are active in the community offering five $ 500 scholarships to Automotive Shop Career Program students.

The first Nostalgia Drag Races were held in Ashcroft in 1988, followed by Mission in 1993 following its reopening. In 1995 the club began sponsorship of Langley high school bursaries and high school drags at Ashcroft, Prince George and Mission racetracks.
