New Coal Harbour restaurant menu reflects pals’ culinary past

It’s also game over for Yaletown 1950s- style bistro that once bore the name Deniro’s Bistro, now known as Section ( 3)

ONE DOOR OPENS: Chefs Abdel Elatouabi and Gordon Martin have launched their Sol Sun Belt Cookery restaurant at Denman Street’s north waterfront. Licensed for 120, the premises housed Casablanca- born Elatouabi’s Bravo Bistro until 2007, when a 50- per- cent hike in the $ 10,000 monthly rent saw him vamoose to be executive chef to Moroccan Crown Prince Moulay Rachid ben al- Hassan. Returning in May to find the place closed, he called pal and sometime Morocco vacationer Martin, the Bin 941, Bin 942 and Go Fish restaurateur.

Peering through grimy windows while killing a sixer of Kronenbourg beer, the two became business partners.

Knowing Elatouabi’s habit of actually paying rent, the new landlord made a deal — for $ 10,300 monthly. The menu reflects the partners’ culinary pasts, with tapas dishes in the Mediterranean- rim manner. Just as tastily, jazzers Karla Sleightholme and Stephan Fortin play sax and standup bass to electronic backing Fridays and Saturdays. ANOTHER CLOSES: In 1994, Salli Pateman founded the 1950s- style Deniro’s Bistro in then- nascent Yaletown. Screen actor Robert De Niro squawked, so she renamed it Section ( 3) after the B. C. Privacy Act section aimed at her. It’ll be game over Sept. 22, with a party ending Pateman’s 6,543- day innings in a district that grew up around her. UNROLL YOUR OWN: Can’t afford his art- gallery canvases? Oil painter Michael

Abraham ( michael@michaelabraham.com) says his $ 200, five- session courses ( four with live models) “turn the masses into masters.” JIGGERS AND JAZZ: Randy Bachman reportedly wrote She’s Come Undone at Andrew and Lee Rennison and Tony Kalla’s 72- room Burrard Hotel. Liquor is now served there, along with counter chow from the Glowbal group, Lebeau Patisserie and banana- bread baker Erin Ireland.

That may lure mortgage broker Kalla’s novelist- brother Dan from St. Paul’s Hospital across the street, where he’s department head and chair of emergency medicine. Meanwhile, the Company B Jazz Band performs Andrews Sistersstyle repertoire beside a tropical garden that, with the new jolly- juice licence, well suits songs like Rum and CocaCola. FNO TO GO: At Zahra Mamdani’s Kitsilano Wear Else store recently, Florence Yeung and Christa Leigh launched the mobile web app app. fnovancouver. com for their citywide Fashion’s Night Out extravaganza Sept. 6. It details the fashion- show main event at the CBC building, plus many restaurant and retailer participants, including Wear Else. STEPPING BACK: With Crystal Pite choreographing and Acacia Schachte dancing for the New York- based Cedar Lake company, DanceHouse’s Sept. 28- 29 concert at the Playhouse sounds nostalgic. In 1999, city guitarist Budge Schachte’s daughter was the first graduate of Arts Umbrella — now a Ballet BC farm team — to join that professional company.

Pite was a BBC principal dancer there for many years. As a Cedar Lake dancer in the

film The Adjustment Bureau, Schachte doubled for English actress Emily Blunt, who appeared here in 2007 as Michael Bublé’s fiance. The Burnaby- raised singer later wed Argentine Luisana Lopilato.

TRUTH TO TELL: This week’s Pinocchio- nose- growing in Florida and pantomiming in Victoria supported late observer Auberon Waugh’s: “Until ( the public) accepts that the urge to power is a personality disorder in its own right …

there will always be a danger of circumstances arising which persuade ordinary people to start listening to politicians and would- be politicians, and taking them seriously.”

SETTING IT STRAIGHT: The skull- adorned hat Erin

Cebula wore recently was made by Hive Mind Millinery owner Dominique Hanke. DOWN PARRYSCOPE: Rita, Kim … Christy?
