Contemporary and luxurious westside living

The Westerly attempts to live up to its marketing motto ‘ when you want the best, go west’

- CHANTAL EUSTACE

As its name suggests, The Westerly will be situated in Vancouver’s well- established westside — and specifically, at the corner of West Broadway and Collingwood Street.

Its address was a big draw for new- home shopper Takamasa Momose.

“The location is the most important thing,” he says, adding he and his wife live in Point Grey and wanted to stay in the area.

The couple purchased a twobedroom apartment on the top level of The Westerly, he says, adding they also liked its proximity to the University of B. C., where he works as a professor.

“It’s convenient,” he says, adding it will be an easy bus ride to and from the university.

The building has a good layout and design too, Momose says, and the price was reasonable for the area.

The four- level GBE Developments project, due to be completed early in 2014, will include a mix of homes ranging from one-, two- and three- bedroom options, from 493 square feet to 1,295 square feet. Homes start at $ 319,900. “We offer something for everyone,” says David Zigelman of Magnum Projects Ltd., the project’s marketer. “We have residences that cover a wide spectrum.”

The variety of home sizes means they’ll appeal to everyone from first- time buyers to downsizers, or what Zigelman calls “right- sizers,” people looking for a home that fits their current needs.

“The response has been amazing,” he says, adding people are particularly enthusiastic about the location.

The sales kit underlines this, too, with the slogan: “When you want the best, go west.”

“Surround yourself with the finer things in life — the best schools, the most exclusive sport and social clubs, the majesty of nature,” it says.

“Live close to the ocean, countless parks and forest trails. Be among the discerning few to call The Westerly home.”

Inside the sales centre, which is located on the building site, you can see a scale model of The Westerly, a project designed by Cornerstone Architecture.

It combines a stylish mix of elements, like Arctic white and ironstone brick, as well as standing seam metal siding with coloured vinyl frame windows.

The look of the building fits the neighbourhood well, Zigelman says.

“You don’t see brick too often,” he says. “It’s contemporary and modern.” Just like the interiors. Buyers can opt for either a darker and lighter colour palette, he says, with interiors designed by Gannon Ross Designs.

Floors are wide- plank oak laminate throughout. This makes a nice contrast against the white- painted walls and good- sized windows, complete with roller- style shades.

Bathrooms are airy and modernlooking, featuring quartz countertops, large porcelain tile flooring, and a nifty, customdesigned mirror and shelving unit with plenty of storage.

These have tub and shower hardware from Grohe, an undermount sink from Chelini and eco- friendly FloWise toilets from American Standard.

In the 493- square- feet display suite ( a plan A layout), an open- concept layout and smart floor- plan helps create a lofty impression.

“The layout is well- designed,” says Zigelman, standing inside the kitchen pointing to the quartz countertops, glass backsplashes as well as contemporarylooking, wood veneer cabinetry illuminated with under cabinet lighting.

“This home has all the details.”

For instance, the premium appliance package on display is standard in all homes, he says, including the home’s full- sized, counter- depth stainless fridge from Fisher Paykel.

It’s also got a stainless gas cook top and stainless wall oven, also from Fisher Paykel.

And the Panasonic microwave is found nicely tucked behind the kitchen island, leaving more counter space available.

“It’s just very effective design,” says Zigelman, moving to the living room.

He points out the sliding glass doors that connect the bedroom, a contemporarylooking partition that lets light to move freely but allows for easy privacy.

Ceilings are nine- foot throughout, he says, another nice feature: “It really does make the space that much bigger.”

Buyers will have their own storage locker, as well as access to convenient bike storage and a gated, secure underground parkade.

After the tour of the display unit, Zigelman stops in front of a map in the sale’s centre.

It highlights the many nearby amenities, like schools, parks, shops and more.

“It’s a very central location,” Zigelman says, smiling. “And walkable.”

Perfect for those home- hunters looking for more Westerly living.
