Reel 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth

-

1. It’s ( supposedly) not just for kids

The Reel 2 Real International Film Festival For Youth bills itself as “not just for kids” and its organizers would like to see that message hit home with a wider audience. Certainly, anyone with an interest in character- driven drama will appreciate films such as the Dutch- made drama Kauwboy, the bittersweet tale of a neglected boy who forms an attachment to an abandoned baby bird he finds in the woods. Recommended for ages 12 and up; in Dutch with English subtitles. ( April 13, 4: 30 p. m.)

2. But of course it is mainly for kids

Parents who would like to expand their little one’s movie diet beyond saccharine Hollywood fare will find plenty to delight and inspire. Opening night gala Moon Man is based on the book by Toni Ungerer. Suitable for kids 7 and up, this animated feature follows Moon Man on his journey to earth, where he discovers the special place that he holds in the hearts of Earth’s children, who are unable to sleep without seeing him in the sky. ( April 12, 6: 30 p. m.; April 14, 11 a. m.; April 17, 10 a. m.)

3. It highlights the work of young filmmakers

At the Youth Filmmakers Showcase, young directors and writers from around the province will get the thrill of seeing their work up on the big screen before an audience — an accomplishment that many adult filmmakers spend years striving toward. The 90- minute program of shorts is followed by a professionally adjudicated awards ceremony and brief reception. ( April 18, 4 p. m.)

4. You can learn stuff at handson workshops

Reel 2 Real Talent Labs takes storytelling techniques from the screen and puts them in the hands of curious craft- minded kids in fun, experiential workshops following selected film screenings. This year’s Talent Lab is led by Montreal artist collective Mere Phantoms, known for their delicate and intricate cut- paper installations. In the workshop, kids can create three- dimensional paper sculptures and use them to explore the interplay between light and shadow. Participation is free with screening admission, but pre- registration is required.

5. You can go in your pyjamas

Show up early for the Family Shorts program on Saturday April 13 to catch the Reel 2 Real pajama party, where breakfast is served free to those who come appropriately attired in jammies. What better way to start the weekend? ( April 13, 10: 30 a. m., followed by Family Shorts screening at 11: 30 a. m.)

April 12- 19 | Roundhouse Community Centre and Vancity Theatre
