Dr. John, Cuba, Bettye Lavette to play jazz fest
Vogue and Performance Works series revealed
Soul, folk, R& B, traditional jazz and even poetry will all be on the menu at this year’s TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, as the festival revealed its Vogue Theatre and Performance
Works series Tuesday.
The festival announced a Vogue Theatre double bill featuring pianist/ singer Michael Kaeshammer and B. C.
Latin soul man Alex Cuba ( June 21); and another featuring “soul brother” Lee Fields and soul man Nick Waterhouse ( June 24); with highly anticipated performances by soul singer Bettye Lavette ( June 22); the previously announced Esperanza Spalding Radio Music Society ( June 23); improv jazz great John Scofield ( June 25);
New Orleans voodoo blues man Dr. John ( June 26); David Murray Infinity Quartet featuring Macy Gray ( June 27); genre- mashing globe- trotters Red Baraat ( June 28); Montreal vocalist Nikki Yanofsky ( June 29); and B. C. slam poet Shane Koyczan ( June 30).
The Performance Works series on Granville Island will feature Vijay Iyer Trio ( June 21); Carmen Souza ( June 22); two shows by Malinese guitar master Vieux Farka Toure ( June 23); Gregory Porter ( June 24); Youn Sun Nah and Ulf Wakenius ( June 25); Kurt Rosenwinkel ( June 26); Courtney Pine ( June 27); Patricia Barber ( June 28); and Alfredo Rodriguez Trio ( June 29).
“These are our two most important series,” TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival media director John Orysik said. “But today’s announcement really represents our philosophy to blend the cutting edge with crossover elements.”
