Vancouver designer finds inspiration in vintage imagery

-

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS. Flight Path Designs is a line of graphic leather goods- including accessories such as earrings, pendants, belt buckles and belts.

HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE YOUR ESTHETIC? Most of the inspiration for my pieces comes from vintage imagery, including books, architecture and nature themes. I love fashion, graphic design, rich tactile surfaces, and a minimal esthetic. As a result, I’m drawn to creating pieces that are nostalgic but also have a certain timelessness to them.

WHAT’S NEW FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON? This season I have some new belt buckle designs of marine life inspired by the West Coast and a recent trip to Tofino. In the new year I’m hoping to have more time to develop another line of household goods with the same esthetic as my current work.

H OW DID YOU GET INTO DESIGNING? After finishing a fine arts degree in Calgary, I shared a studio with a friend. It was then that I realized I wanted to support myself primarily from my creative endeavours. Through a process of experimentation and fate, Flight Path Designs came to fruition. When I moved to Vancouver in 2008, the transition to a new city was refreshing and motivated me to take the plunge to become a full- time maker.

WHO

IS YOUR MAIN

MARKET? My products are designed with the customer in mind who appreciates an alternative to mass produced products and

is interested in supporting locally made economies.

D O YOU MAKE YOUR PRODUCTS YOURSELF, AND IF NOT, WHERE ARE THEY MANUFACTURED? The products are all made at my studio in East Vancouver. What’s

your price point? Products range from $ 25 to $ 80. WHERE

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SOLD? I sell online at flight pathdesigns. etsy. com and in Vancouver you can find our work at Dream in Gastown.

WHAT

ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR YOUR

LABEL? Behind every one of my products is a desire to strive with attention to detail, design and functionality. I am also thinking of branching out into other areas such as stationary and household goods.
