1. Bhangra: It’s like a jumping jack. You stand with your feet wide apart and hands in the air, and then bend your knees and elbows at the same time, so down together, up together, down together, up together.

2. Jhumar: This move stems from the word “jhoom,” which means to sway side to side. You put your left hand on your waist and your right hand high in the air and make an OK sign with your fingers. Then, starting with the left foot, you step with the left, then step with the right, swaying as you are stepping.

4. Single chaffa: Starting with your left foot, you do a kind of soccer kick. You kick out twice with your left foot and then you jump and switch legs and kick twice with your right foot — moving your arms at the same time. Whichever foot is kicking, that hand is down beside your body and the other is up, stretched out above your head, pumping back and forth as though it is moving with your opposite leg.

3. Dhamaal: Your hands are up in the air, high, almost in a U- shape, palms open. Then you lift your left leg in the air, knee bent at a 90- degree angle, and hop on your foot three times. Then you switch legs and do the same thing. This move goes with a very specific drum beat called the “dhol.” Most of these core movements have specific beats that go with each. The specific beat for Step 1, for example, is called bhangra.

5. Fasla: In this move you are depicting a crop blowing in the wind. The feet are in a wide stance and you kick back, almost like you are kicking your butt, one leg at a time. The arms hang loose and sway side to side, almost like a speed skater.
