Four of the five highest- paid employees at B. C.’ s universities and colleges work at the University of B. C., according to The Vancouver Sun’s exclusive database of public- sector salaries.

According to The Sun’s sixth annual database, UBC president Stephen Toope is the highest- paid post- secondary employee in B. C. with total remuneration of $ 533,445 in the 2012/ 13 fiscal year. This is the third year in a row Toope has topped the list.

Toope has announced he plans to leave UBC this year to take on a new position at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs.

The next two highest- paid postsecondary employees also work at UBC: Dean of Medicine Gavin Stuart at $ 513,905, and radiology professor Francois Benard at $ 480,485.

David Turpin, who left his post as University of Victoria president in 2012, is fourth at $ 430,733.

UBC’s Regional Associate Dean of Medicine Allan Jones is fifth at $ 427,524.

UBC’s generous compensation extends beyond the Top Five list.

Of the 100 highest- earning individuals in the entire database, 13 work for UBC, which is tied with Powerex for third highest of any agency and after the Provincial Health Services Authority with 41 and the B. C. Investment Management Corp. with 14.

Lisa Castle, UBC’s vice- president of human resources, wrote in an email that UBC is the largest university in the province, with 58,000 students and an annual operating budget of more than $ 2 billion.

“The whole of the university and many of its faculties are essentially large, complex organizations that require visionary and extremely capable leadership and management,” she wrote.

The Sun’s database includes remuneration information for 25 universities and colleges across B. C.

There are a total of 12,234 university and college employees in this year’s salary database.

In 2008, The Sun launched B. C.’ s first searchable online database of public- sector salaries.

The database, which includes public servants who earn more than $ 75,000, has been enormously popular, registering more than 12 million web page views. It is available at vancouversun. com/ pay.
