Outdoor living 2014 predictions

Nature- themed fabrics, solar lighting and weathered greys lead the way

- SARAH KELSEY

Spring is not too far off, and we’re all looking forward to the days when we’ll be soaking up the sun on our backyard patios.

To help us get there, we contacted Tracy Platt, the manager of private- label brand development at Canadian Tire. To get us inspired, we chatted with Platt about how to decorate our backyard spaces in 2014 and about the blurring line between indoor and outdoor living.

When it comes to 2014 patio trends, what do you think will make the biggest splash?

Spring 2014 will see the return of nature- themed patterns in an unexpected mix, with modern prints such as chevrons, watercolour dots and playful stripes. When it comes to outdoor furniture, the trend is natural materials and fresh colour to add some warmth to a space.

Which trend has the greatest staying power?

The outdoors is such a natural inspiration for patio, but what’s new is the more weathered grey colours we’re seeing, and these will certainly be around for a few more seasons both indoor and out. Rustic touches like aged woods, distressed finishes and raw linen looks will continue as well. How have people changed the way they use their outdoor space in recent years?

People are creating this space as an extension of their home and incorporating the same colours and accessories; now, there truly is something for every look and style. There are only 92 days of summer and families want to enjoy their outdoor space — small or big — as much as possible, which is why outdoor heating and lighting options have increased. So now your backyard design esthetic can match the one you have inside your home?

Yes. ( Outdoor and indoor spaces) have virtually started to mirror each other in every way. We’re seeing this in pieces like solar- powered lighting that looks like what you’d expect to see indoors, or beautiful fireplaces and harvest tables that invite you to stay outdoors for as long as possible. Even furniture has started to blur the line of what an outdoor dining table or loveseat looks like.
