Onex chief’s $ 85.3M trounces some GDPs

- POSTMEDIA NEWS

Onex Corp., Canada’s largest buyout firm, paid CEO and founder Gerald Schwartz, 72, $ 85.3 million US in 2013 compensation, higher than payouts for the top executives of Walt Disney Co., Coca- Cola Co. and Visa Inc. combined.

If you’re feeling a tad envious, you’re not alone. Take, for example, the following countries and territories whose estimated gross domestic product — the value of goods and services produced in a year — are somewhat less impressive than Schwartz’s whopping payback last year.

Formerly known as Pleasant Island, the island nation is in Micronesia in the South Pacifi c. Nauru has nearly 10,000 residents over about 21 square kilometres. It is the second- smallest nation, by population, on the planet. ( 2005 estimate)

$ 60M The Territory of Wallis and Futuna Islands

A French island group in the South Pacifi c, Wallis and Futuna has about 15,000 residents over about 264 square kilometres. It has three main volcanic tropical islands. ( 2004 estimate)

$ 44M Montserrat

A British Overseas Territory in the West Indies, this Caribbean nation has about 5,200 residents over about 102 square kilometres. It is known as The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. ( 2006 estimate)

$ 37M Tuvalu

A Polynesian island nation between Hawaii and Australia, Tuvalu has nearly 11,000 people over its 26 square kilometres. Tuvalu is the fourth- smallest country in the world. ( 2012 estimate)
