Vancouver duo behind Dirt Squirrel say men’s underwear ‘ neglected’ as style element

Q How would you describe your line? A ( Dan): Dirt Squirrel is liberal, fun and sensible with a bit of an edge. We have endeavoure­d to create something comfortabl­e and stylish, which has resulted in bamboo fabric, unique designs, compliment­ary colours and well- fitted underwear. The Dirt Squirrel brand is a little sassy and encourages people to step out of their comfort zones in order to bring the underwear to life. Dirt Squirrel has three categories of underwear: boxer briefs, briefs and jockstraps, with ... three different colour variations. Q How did Dirt Squirrel come about? A ( Wade): Unlike many other clothing brands and their founders, this venture did not begin by leaving our respective wombs with some unexplaina­ble gift, knowledge or urge that would later result in us delving into a lifetime of fashion. A year ago, we were your average university students, eating fast food, debating over vodka or gin for the weekend and procrastin­ating on a plethora of assignment­s that determined whether or not we got to mount really expensive pieces of paper on our walls. Instead of using this time to write papers about Kyle MacDonald’s Craigslist bartering strategy or Lyotard and the Postmodern Condition, we used our time to brainstorm a fun little project that we did not necessaril­y see coming to fruition. After months of brainstorm­ing, jokingly discussing the possibilit­y of making our ideas legitimate, acing those previously mentioned papers and graduating, we decided to gamble on ourselves and jump right in. Q

Who is is your your main main market? market? A ( Wade): Our products are for any individual who has the desire to wear them, but our main target market is men. Being men ourselves, we understand the male body and what looks or feels best, so we play to that strength. Of course, we are always delighted when someone who isn’t our target demographi­c buys a pair and loves them.

Q How does it differ from other men’s underwear brands? A ( Dan): Our underwear is made for style, comfort and a conversati­on piece. Dirt Squirrel isn’t just an underwear brand, it is also a lifestyle that most people are knowingly — or unknowingl­y — a part of. It acknowledg­es that underwear should not be neglected when defining your style, and when an underwear brand’s flair matches your personalit­y, there is no going back. Dirt Squirrel underwear is made of very soft fabrics, is fitted yet comfortabl­e, has a thick waistband. … Our next line of products will add an assortment of new features, colours, styles and prints that any sensible man would want to ( wear).
