Colbert has much more than The Report on his resume
Here are five highlights from comedy career of the just- announced replacement for David Letterman on Late Night on CBS
Stephen Colbert, confirmed to succeed David Letterman to host Late Night on CBS, may be best known for pontificating on The Daily Show and then The Colbert Report. But he’s also worked on many non- Report projects in his career. Here are five:
• Strangers With Candy — With two of his castmates from Second City Chicago, Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, Colbert created the cult TV show Strangers With Candy in 1999 ( and a movie in 2005). He played closeted gay history teacher Chuck Noble.
• Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law — Colbert voiced several characters on this animated Cartoon Network/ Adult Swim series, about a law firm staffed mainly by superheroes and characters from 1960s- era Hanna- Barbera cartoons. It ran from 2000 to 2007.
• Wigfield: The Can Do Town That Just May Not — Colbert teamed up with Dinello and Sedaris again for a satirical 2003 text- and- picture novel from Hyperion Books. It centres on a town threatened by the impending destruction of a large dam.
• The 1 Second Film — Colbert is a producer of The 1 Second Film, dubbed the world’s largest non- profit collaborative art film. As the title says, it comprises one second of animation — but has a massive credit list, including celebs like Colbert and regular folk who participated through crowd funding.
• Company — In 2011, Colbert performed as Harry in the revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Company, presented by the New York Philharmonic at the Lincoln Center. Other cast members included Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Cryer and Christina Hendricks.
