A Point Roberts primer

-

As Wayne Lyle sees it, the community of Point Roberts isn’t unlike the venue of a popular sitcom from the Eighties. “This is like the Cheers bar. It’s such a small town, you get to know everyone’s name,” says the marketing director for The Cottages at Seabright Farm. “It may be only fi rst names, but it’s very cool that way.” Point Roberts may be small — it has some 1,300 residents, ballooning to several times that number in the summer — but it has considerable to off er. The fi ve- square- mile Washington state community directly south of Tsawwassen has a supermarket, wine and liquor stores, public library and community centre and multiple eateries and eclectic shops, along with parks, an 18- hole golf course and a 900- slip fullservice marina. Add to this the fact that it enjoys considerably more sunshine than its huge urban neighbour north of the Canada- U. S. border. At its core, Point Roberts remains a friendly community that shuns big- city concerns.
