Man who put child in frying pan while he danced is jailed
‘ Narcissistic idiocy’ draws six- month term
CALGARY — A 23- year- old man has admitted he placed the two- year- old son of his female roommate in a frying pan on a red- hot burner of a kitchen stove, while he danced with a male friend to a rap song called The Cooking Dance four years ago.
Judge Les Grieve sentenced Adhmed Hosh Jidril on Friday in Drumheller provincial court to six months in prison, on top of the 3 ½ - year sentence he is currently serving in Drumheller Institution for drug trafficking.
Jidril pleaded guilty to failing to perform the duties owed to a child by endangering the toddler’s life while babysitting.
Grieve said he accepted a joint sentencing submission by Crown prosecutor Ron Pedersen and duty counsel Colin Kloot only because the man pleaded guilty and the infant was not seriously injured.
The incident, in Aug. 22, 2010, came to light only recently when a video of the event was produced.
“This is the narcissistic idiocy of a social media showoff,” Grieve said before sentencing.
“The mother probably didn’t even know about it and didn’t find out until the video surfaced years later.
If the child had been hurt, I would have added several more years to your jail term.
JUDGE LES GRIEVE
PROVINCIAL COURT
“If the child had been hurt, I would have added several more years to your jail term.”
Grieve said Jidril put the baby in the frying pan, which he then set on a glass stove top.
He then turned the burner on and off and danced to the music while the friend videotaped the incident.
“The child was crying and, at times, placed his hand on the stove top, but fortunately his hand did not come in contact with the element, which was red- hot at times,” Grieve said.
Kloot described the incident as “a stupid act, not meant to be torturous or malicious.” Read breaking news on your mobile device at vancouversun. com
