Jets’ backup Vick lacks bite in loss to Chargers

-

Highlights from Sunday’s NFL action:

• Michael Vick replaced Geno Smith on New York’s first possession of the second half, but wasn’t any more effective in the Jets’ 31-0 loss at San Diego. Smith completed only four of 12 passes for 27 yards with one interception for a rating of 7.6. Vick was 9 of 20 for 47 yards.

• New Orleans’ Drew Brees surpassed 40,000 yards passing with the Saints in his 132nd game with the club. Dan Marino had been the fastest to 40,000 yards with one club, doing so with Miami in 153 games.

• Brian Hoyer of the Browns, threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin with 1:09 left, and Cleveland rallied from a 25-point deficit to beat the Tennessee Titans 29-28. Hoyer was 21 of 37 of 292 yards and three TDs and an INT.

• Austin Davis of the Rams, who began the year as the No. 3 quarterback, finished with 375 yards passing and three TDs in St. Louis’ 34-28 loss at Philadelphia — his first game since being elevated to starter for the rest of the season.

• Philip Rivers, Chargers, was 20 of 28 for 288 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception, in San Diego’s 31-0 rout of the New York Jets.

• Julio Jones, Falcons, caught 11 passes for 105 yards in Atlanta’s 30-20 loss to the New York Giants.

• Chris Maragos, Eagles, returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in Philadelphia’s 34-28 win over Carolina.

• Brice McCain, Steelers, returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown, helping Pittsburgh beat the winless Jacksonville Jaguars 17-9.

• Broncos slot receiver Wes Welker broke Rod Smith’s mark for most catches by an undrafted player. His 850th career grab, his third of the game, covered five yards.

• Houston’s Andre Johnson became the second-faster receiver to 950 catches by finishing with five for 954 after 159 games. He’ll have to wait at least another week to be the second fastest to 13,000 yards, finishing with 58 to fall 19 yards short. He has two more games to beat Marvin Harrison’s mark of 162 games. Jerry Rice did it in 154.

• Odell Beckham Jr. made his NFL debut a memorable one, catching a go-ahead 15-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning with 10:02 left in the New York Giants win over Atlanta. Beckham, the 12th pick overall in May, finished with four catches for 44 yards after missing all of the pre-season and the first four games of the regular season with a hamstring injury.

• New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham took a big hit making a catch over the middle and left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with a right shoulder injury. The team did not provide specifics on the severity of the injury.

• Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker left the Titans’ 29-28 loss to Cleveland with a thumb injury. Locker will have more tests Monday. Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt also said veteran safety Bernard Pollard may have hurt his Achilles tendon.

• Arizona lost quarterback Drew Stanton, who was being evaluated for a concussion after being hit by Denver’s Von Miller in the third quarter.
