Antonio’s parents sent him to live in an orphanage when he was seven years old. He understands now that, in some ways, it was an act of kindness: he had three meals a day, a bed to sleep in, and a good education. But no love. He believes his life- long battle with depression began then, and his struggle with alcohol not long after as he began to self- medicate.

“I had no dignity when it came to alcohol,” he said. “I would sit on the street and beg for money so I could buy more.”

Antonio’s demons chased him from his native El Salvador throughout his travels and into Canada where he eventually entered a detox program with The Salvation Army. Workers there referred him to the Strathcona + ental Health team, who, in turn, connected him with the Coast Clubhouse. His first visit there was over 17 years ago.

He sees the Clubhouse as helping immensely when it comes to coping with his depression.

“This is a great place to come when you’re not feeling good because the people here understand,” said Antonio. “We’re all different; but we’re all on the same train.”
