GETAWAY PROPERTY: BUYING BEYOND THE BORDER

More and more Canadians are heading in that direction

-

For many lucky Canadians, retirement looks like a dream home in California, Arizona, Hawaii or Florida — one with a pool and patio for entertaining guests. Where you can cycle, golf, hike, practise yoga or swim in year- round comfortable temperatures.

Canadians — especially baby boomers — are attracted to sunbelt states in increasing numbers; the happy result of having plenty of equity in their paid- off primary residences and a prolonged downturn in American home prices due to a variety of economic factors.

The first thing that American realtors will tell you about Canadians is that we sure love a bargain — hardly surprising, since many of us have been cross- border shopping for years. Canadians invest in real estate for a whole variety of reasons, and no matter how mesmerized we might be by dazzling sunshine and shimmering desert vistas, buying a vacation home is serious business and due diligence is required.

So, take a look around before you take the plunge. There’s tons of selection, and prices are still pretty great.

And enjoy the sunshine.
