More transit consultation is needed

Re: Metro directors urge scrapping of referendum, Nov. 29

I recently learned that the mayors’ council had already approved a $ 7.5- billion regional transportation plan back in June.

Now they are agonizing over how to phrase the referendum question to get our citizens to approve the funding for their plan.

Before asking us for money, were the people ever asked what kind of system they are willing to pay for?

If not, we should have the right to vote on what we want, especially on the expensive Broadway subway system.

Why can we not build a much less expensive light- rail system similar to what Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner has promised with or without referendum approval?

The infrastructure ( Canadian Pacific rail corridor) already exists in Vancouver, so why not use it?

Less expensive light rail would enable us to build all the way to UBC.

Why would the mayor force an expensive subway system on us that stops at Arbutus? Is it because he wants to exploit the huge development potential along West Broadway with each transit station inevitably surrounded by glass and concrete highrises?

Why does Vancouver not have a 24/ 7 subway system so that people can get home at any time of the night rather than be stranded in the city?

We should get answers to these questions before we start talking about funding. MARLISE REUTER Vancouver
