Weekend winter storm to pound Metro Vancouver
Environment Canada has posted a winter storm alert for Metro Vancouver, with snow and freezing rain expected on the weekend.
The agency says remnants of the Arctic air that brought a cold and sunny end to 2014 will linger along the coast this weekend. Forecasters say “dense and bone-chilling Arctic air” will be pouring out the inlets and valleys of the North Coast, hitting the South Coast by Saturday night, when lower areas of Metro Vancouver should see the first few flakes of snow.
Near the coastline, snow or mixed rain and snow will develop late in the evening, the alert says, with accumulations likely occurring at higher elevations. As more Pacific air floods onto the coast Sunday, the agency says snowfall will be heavy in some inland regions and freezing rain could cause treacherous travel conditions.
