Seahawks’ Sherman faces elbow surgery

-

PHOENIX — Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman played the Super Bowl with torn ligaments in his left elbow and will likely need Tommy John surgery in the off-season.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Monday before the team left Arizona that it was his understanding that Sherman would need the surgery after the All-Pro cornerback was injured in the NFC championship game against Green Bay.

Sherman played in the Seahawks’ 28-24 loss to New England without a brace on the elbow and did not appear to be impeded by the injury. Sherman is not the only Seattle star who could be facing off-season surgery.

All-Pro safety Earl Thomas may need to have the labrum in his left shoulder repaired and strong safety Kam Chancellor may need knee surgery.

BROADCASTER SAPP ARRESTED: Former NFL lineman and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was arrested Monday on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute and allegedly assaulting two women, Phoenix police said.

Sapp was taken into custody at a downtown Phoenix hotel and booked into jail, police said. Sapp, 42, was in Arizona for Sunday’s Super Bowl in suburban Glendale and is a broadcaster for the NFL Network.

“Warren Sapp has been suspended indefinitely without pay from NFL Network pending the outcome of ongoing police investigation,” Alex Riethmiller, a spokesman for the network, said in a statement Monday.

Sapp, a tackle and defensive end, played in the NFL from 1995-2007 for Tampa Bay and Oakland. He was a vital contributor for the Buccaneers as they went from also-ran to Super Bowl champion after the 2002 season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sapp has had a history with legal troubles around the Super Bowl. He was arrested the day before the Super Bowl in 2010 on a domestic battery charge, but prosecutors later dropped the case.

MANZIEL IN TREATMENT: Johnny Manziel, 22, has sought help to change his off-field lifestyle. Following a rough rookie season in the NFL, Manziel has entered a treatment

program for unspecified reasons, an adviser for the Browns quarterback said in a statement.

Manziel’s penchant for partying followed him from college into the pros and has been wellchronicled by both social and mainstream media.

LEAGUE PROBES NOISE COMPLAINT: The NFL is trying to determine if the Atlanta Falcons pumped fake crowd noise into the Georgia Dome for home games the last two years.

Team spokesman Reggie Roberts says the team has “co-operated fully” after being informed of the league’s investigation.

The Falcons could be fined or penalized with the loss of a draft pick if found to have added fake crowd noise during the opposing team’s huddles when trying to call a play.
