Cam Hutchins reports on some mind

blowing metal at Tradex show

Last weekend was a relatively quiet one for local car events, but this weekend has more to offer. I missed the Haney Swapmeet from pure exhaustion as there were so many cool cars to photograph at the Tradex Event Centre, I had to get there early. I was out to Abbotsford a lot last week as Tuesday was the unveiling of the first 2015 Corvette Z06 in B.C. at Murray Chevrolet. A customer/friend of mine, Ben Hsu, was the lucky dude who got to write the cheque and drive away in the bright blue Beast — “the Blue Monster” to quote Hsu.

As I mentioned in last week’s column, the star of the Tradex show would be Don and Elma Voth’s Imposter and sure enough it was. Based on a Corvette chassis and running gear, it had a 1965 Impala body cut up and modified to fit the smaller chassis and looked absolutely perfect.

Here’s a short list of rumours I heard about the “Impostor” over the weekend: it was supposed to be Elma’s grocery getter when finished; it was going to be green; it cannot be driven on the roads in Canada due to motor vehicle rules; and my favourite — well, actually, one I started — builder Chip Foose kept all the original pieces in case the Voths want to return it to stock and get collector plates.

All kidding aside, both buildings of the Tradex were filled with cool cars. Some other notables in the front building not normally seen was a Studebaker pickup, hot-rodded and presented by the Jansen Clan, and a twin-turbo AMX that was in Hot Rod Magazine. The 1968 AMX owned by Kevin Mervin was as over the top as the Impostor was subtle and its green paint was stellar.

This weekend we will have one swapmeet for each cars and motorcycles, a cruise to raise money for cancer, a British car show, a show at the Otter Co-op open and, for those in the know, a three-day car cruise for older specialty vehicles.
