Five named to B.C. Golf Hall of Fame

Strong field expected for Canadian Pacific Women’s Open

- BRAD ZIEMER

Former LPGA Tour winners Jennifer Wyatt of Richmond and Gail Graham of Kelowna are among five players who will be inducted this fall into the B.C. Golf Hall of Fame.

They will be joined by Victoria native and current European Senior Tour regular Rick Gibson, former longtime McCleery pro and past CPGA champion Alvie Thompson of Sechelt, and two- time B. C. Amateur and B.C. Open champion Lyle Crawford.

They will be inducted at an Oct. 22 ceremony at Marine Drive Golf Club.

NICE MOVE: Classy. That’s the best way to describe the decisions by Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor to play in a Vancouver Golf Tour event earlier this week in Chilliwack.

The two PGA Tour rookies from Abbotsford teed it up in the VGT’s pro-am fundraiser for the University of the Fraser Valley team at Chilliwack Golf Club.

It is not the first time Hadwin and Taylor have come out to support the VGT, where they both honed their games before making it to golf’s promised land.

Hadwin shot a five-under 67 to finish two shots behind winner Kevin Stinson of Mission. Taylor struggled to a three-over 75.

ON THE RAILS: The Canadian Pacific Women’s Open figures to draw another stellar field when it visits Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam in mid-August. Past champions Lydia Ko, So Yeon Ryu, Suzann Pettersen, Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr, Michelle Wie and Katherine Hull are all confirmed for this year’s event. Brooke Henderson, the 17- year- old from Smiths Falls, Ont., who has had a terrific start to her pro career, has been granted a sponsor’s exemption into the tournament. Don’t be surprised to see a Ko-Henderson pairing in the first two rounds.

CP extended its title sponsorship of the event by two years through 2018.

KANSAS CALLING: Surrey’s Adam Svensson will head to Kansas next week, not Fort McMurray. A tie for 11th place at last week’s Web.com Tour stop in Ohio earned Svensson a spot in next week’s Air Capital Classic in Wichita. That tourney has a $600,000 US purse, compared to the $175,000 Cdn that will be up for grabs at the Syncrude Boreal Open on the MacKenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit. Svensson, who tied for second in the first two MacKenzie Tour events at Point Grey and Uplands in Victoria, also has a spot in the Web.com Tour’s Nova Scotia Open, which goes July 2-5.

CHIP SHOTS: Seymour Creek’s Oliver Tubb finished second at this week’s PGA Championship of Canada at Cabot Links in Nova Scotia … More bad news for Sagebrush Golf & Sporting Club, which remains closed while present ownership searches for a buyer. Course superintendent Norley Calder has left the club to take a position in Calgary.
