Red and white and proud all over

-

One of the Canadian flag’s most ardent supporters, Vancouver journalist, CiTR DJ and all-around excitable media personality Nardwuar the Human Serviette has worn various items of flag-themed apparel while performing with his garage-rock band The Evaporators. We asked him some questions about his love of the 11-pointed red maple leaf. Q What kind of Canadian flag paraphernalia do you own?

A I have quite a few items but my favourites are my onepiece “Canada Man” skin-tight jumpsuit, my red long-sleeve Canadian flag sweater and my Canadian flag motorcycle helmet. Q You’ve been known to wear or at least prominently endorse the Canadian flag. What does it mean to you?

A I love Canada. I love Vancouver, B.C. It’s fun to wear items that represent what you stand for and also that look good.

Q The debate over what eventually became the Canadian flag lasted six months in the House of Commons. Why do you think it took so long?

A In terms of government decisions that seems pretty quick to me.

Q Could they have chosen a better flag?

A I think from the proposals submitted, it was the best one. Q Is the Canadian flag boring?

A Red and white can never be boring.

Q What kind of reaction does the flag get outside of Canada, in your experience? Do people make fun of it?

A I have worn my Canadianthemed clothing many times during performances in my band The Evaporators and people, even years later, remember it clearly.

Q How will you be celebrating Canada Day?

A Listening to my favourite Canadian punk rock song “Oh Canaduh” by The Subhumans from Vancouver.
