Climate change is everyone’s business
Re: Canada a blip on a warmer Earth, Andrew Coyne column, Dec. 1
As a global environmental systems major, the global issue of climate change is no stranger to me. Even if Canada is a “blip” because of our low contribution to emissions globally (which is strictly to do with our population size and nothing to do with environmentally-friendly behaviour), this is no excuse for us to not take action.
Climate change is everyone’s responsibility and everyone’s problem. There is no use throwing blame around, because when the effects are felt it just won’t be in the areas who are “responsible” for the most GHG emissions.
Being the country we are, we need to take a stand against climate change. By doing this, we can set an example for the rest of the world to follow and convince other countries to follow our lead.
With a projected warmer temperature of 4 C by 2100, no one wants to leave their grandchildren with food shortages, extreme weather, and droughts.
Humanity has come together to solve many issues, and as Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until is done.”
For the issue of climate change, Canada just might have to be the one to take the lead. JENNIFER WATSON Mission
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s grandstanding and offering billions of dollars of borrowed money at the Paris climate conference is irrelevant as Canada’s GHG emissions are just 1.6 per cent of total global emissions.
If we stopped marketing LNG, and other fossil fuels to reduce our GHG’s further, it will not make a dent in climate change.
It would, however, unnecessarily impoverish us with a weakening dollar, reduced economic activity and lack of wellpaying jobs. JITI KHANNA Vancouver
