Tourney named for Mighty Quinn

-

Burnaby’s halfcentury-old Christmas bantam hockey tournament has a new name and a new format, it was announced Tuesday. The Pat Quinn Classic, named in honour of the late Vancouver Canucks player and longtime executive, pictured, will take place from Dec. 27 to 30 and will include Bantam AAA Elite and Peewee AAA Elite divisions. The Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, which has hosted its Christmas tourney for 52 years, will now welcome 34 teams from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, the United States and Japan. The teams will play across three divisions — Bantam AAA Elite, Bantam AAA and Peewee AAA Elite. Ex-Canuck Cliff Ronning, the tournament’s honorary chair, once competed in the tournament, as did former and current NHL players Joe Sakic, Glenn Anderson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — all Burnaby natives.
