Have it your way

- Shawn Conner

1 It Was a Very Good Year. One hundred years after the birth (Dec. 12 1915) of one of the most popular, and colourful, entertainers of the 20th century, Vancity Theatre salutes Ol’ Blue Eyes with movie screenings and clips from a long and storied career. Styles may change, but Sinatra endures.

2 That’s Life! In That’s Life! A Centennial Celebration. Michael van den Bos hosts a special presentation of clips featuring Sinatra singing, dancing and acting. The Vancouver film scholar will introduce each of the clips, which include bits from the singer’s movies and TV appearances.

3 They Can’t Take That Away From Me. One of the films screening for the event is From Here to Eternity. One of Sinatra’s best-known movies, the 1953 military drama revived his career and demonstrates his acting talent. (Rumours followed the singer for years, saying that he called on his alleged mob connections to get the role.) Montgomery Clift also stars.

4 The Lady is a Tramp. In Pal Joey, the other Sinatra movie screening, he plays a nightclub singer. This gives him plenty of opportunity to perform some of his best-known songs, including My Funny Valentine, Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered, and The Lady is a Tramp. Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth also star.

5 My Way. Yes, the song was covered by Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious, among others, but Frank’s remains the definitive version. Sure, he had regrets, but too few to mention — so celebrate a life well lived with Vancity’s Sinatra Centennial Celebration.
