Workplace satisfaction in mind

Treadmill desks, yoga room, on-site daycare a few perks at credit union’s new HQ

Surrey City Centre has a new tenant — Coast Capital Savings — which aims to take the concept of workplace satisfaction to a higher level.

About 700 employees have moved into the new building, which incorporates employeefriendly concepts such as treadmill desks, an on-site daycare, ergonomic workstations, a fitness centre with yoga room, and cafes on every floor.

“I think we have really created an example of best-practice when it comes to how a corporation should incorporate the mental and physical needs of its employees into the design of its flagship space,” said Coast Capital’s chief people officer, Matt Handford.

Dubbed Help Headquarters, the development is the first of four phases as part of the Hub at King George SkyTrain station, a mixed-used and transit-oriented development, which will include retail, commercial and residential space. Choosing Surrey, instead of downtown Vancouver, was a “strategic choice,” said Coast Capital Savings CEO Don Coulter. “We see Surrey as an economic engine for the province, and Surrey Central as a head office hub of the future,” he said.

“In addition, 70 per cent of our employees who work here live south of the river, and this is home to many of our credit union members. Being located in the heart of Surrey on a rapid transit line positions us to continue to attract commuter employees and those living in the local community.”

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner said in a statement that she is thrilled with the new office, which occupies six floors of a 10-storey LEED Gold-certified building.
