Welcome spring by hanging a monogram on your door

A how-to on a delightful alternative to traditional wreaths

-

Homeowners generally don’t go too crazy decorating their dwellings for Easter or spring.

But as Better Homes and Gardens points out, there are subtle decor opportunities to acknowledge the season.

For instance, pick a favourite letter of the alphabet and turn that letter into a front door hanging.

From there, you can creatively go in either of these directions:

• Succulent Monogram: Considered hearty plants, succulents take their time growing, although water requirements are minimal.

Do consider nighttime temperatures before making this creation.

To construct the monogram, pick a few varieties of succulents to plant in a pre-shaped box, designed in the form of monogrammed letters, hearts or circles. (Detailed information on how to construct this can be found at bhg.com, search for Making a Living Succulent Picture.)

• Jelly Bean Monogram: For a change of pace from traditional wreaths, welcome guests to your home with a jelly bean monogram hanging on your front door.

Construct this decoration by painting a papier-mâché letter using acrylic paint in a springinspired colour such as purple.

Match up the paint colour to the jelly beans or, if going the multi-colour route, mix up pastel jelly beans and a single colour of paint for the letter.

Once the paint is dry, use hot glue to attach the jelly beans to the front of the letter. Let that dry.

Find a ribbon and use hot glue again to attach the ribbon to the back to form a hanging loop from which you’ll hang your new creation.
