Kudos for honouring Uppal

Re: Vancouver street to be named for South Asian pioneer, March 31

Mayor Gregor Robertson and Vancouver city council must be commended for naming a street in Vancouver after Indo-Canadian pioneer Jack Uppal.

Uppal was a very well-read, respected, dedicated and prominent member, not only of the Indo-Canadian community, but also of the community at large.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Jack on some of the issues affecting our community.

Jack was always there to help the needy.

His leadership as a pioneer fighting for the rights of minorities and promoting multiculturalism and intercultural harmony was exemplary.

Jack Uppal was a very strong advocate of integration. He was a great role model for us.

Naming a Vancouver street after Jack Uppal is a great honour not only for Jack but also for the entire South Asian community. Thanks Gregor and Vancouver councillors for bestowing this great honour on a very deserving and outstanding individual.
