THE DEBRIEF

After a fairly dull, scoreless first period, the Canucks surrendered three goals in nine minutes in the second period and were easily beaten as their season-long three-game winning streak came crashing down. Patrick Maroon, pictured, scored twice for the Oilers, who closed Rexall Place after 42 years and 37 NHL seasons. Oiler Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists and keyed an Edmonton power play that went 2-for-4.

BY THE NUMBERS

Bo Horvat scored a beautiful third-period goal for the Canucks and somehow finished plus-two in a 6-2 loss ... Jordan Eberle, pictured, registered seven shots for the Oilers, while teammate Matt Hendricks led everyone, with five hits, and Edmonton’s Jordan Oesterle had a gamehigh 27:57 of ice time ... Canuck Brendan Gaunce went 11-6 on faceoffs ... Markus Granlund was minus-four for Vancouver, 7-9 on faceoffs and did not get a shot on net.

DID YOU NOTICE?

After scoring his first power-play goal in three years in the Canucks’ 3-2 win Monday against the Los Angeles Kings, Jannik Hansen, pictured, was deployed on the first unit against the Oilers. But despite clean entries and zone time, the Canucks failed to register a shot on their first three power plays and finished 0-for-4, goal-less for the 14th time in 16 games. Hansen, a right shot, was used as a shooting option at the left-wing circle.

NEXT UP?

The Canucks chartered postgame to Calgary, where they play their final road game of the season today against the Flames. Their final road game last season was in the playoffs in Calgary after a 101-point season, which was four points better than the Flames. This year, the teams are tied at 73 points, near the bottom of the NHL standings. The Flames lost 5-4 in overtime Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings. Former Canuck prospect Hunter Shinkaruk, pictured, has two goals in five games for Calgary.
