House tour features stylish renos

-

Five beautifully renovated residences will be open to visitors later this month when the Vancouver Heritage Foundation once again holds its Vancouver Special House Tour.

The self-guided tour, which takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 16, will showcase three classic examples of the Vancouver Special, as well as two homes from a similar time period, but with different styles.

One, a 1958 split-level house, is the home the new owner grew up in.

“Recognizing the potential of it, and knowing the floor plan well, the new owner updated and modernized her childhood home to suit the needs of her modern family, including a new vaulted ceiling, restored wood windows and an overall refresh of interior finishes,” says a prepared VHF release detailing the tour.

Also on the tour is a 1953 bungalow with simple architecture that has been “beautifully and remarkably updated with an elegant mix of vintage and locally designed furniture perfectly suited to the mid-century roots of the home.”

The three classic examples include a home built in 1962 with lots of mid-century modern design and a late-era model renovated to suit the owners and a tenant in a newly created suite.

“These homes show the true adaptability of the style,” the release says. “To further expand on this idea, an unusual duplex Vancouver Special shows how creative thinking and ambitious homeowners transformed a building thought by the realtor to be too small, into the perfect home for two growing families.”

Tickets are $30 or $23 for students. To purchase them, visit vancouverheritagefoundation.org or call 604-264-9642.
