LIONS’ GIANT LEVY ADCOCK ALSO A BIG MAN ON THE GOLF COURSE

- Iain MacIntyre

Levy Adcock won a couple of long-drive contests, and we don’t mean the drive from his home in Stillwater, Okla., to training camp here. The 6-6, 325-pound offensive tackle, signed as a free agent by the B.C. Lions from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, is an excellent golfer. Honest. “I just started playing when I got to college and had nothing to do so I was like, ‘I’m going to start golfing,’ ” Adcock, 27, said Wednesday. “I just hit the range. I was 21 the first time I played and just fell in love with it, and now I do it all the time.” Regardless of whether Adcock’s hobby reflected the academic demands while playing football at Oklahoma State, he said his handicap has been as low as two but currently is “a six or a seven.” “He’s been telling us, but I need to see it,” quarterback Travis Lulay said. They’re in the right place. Kamloops has become a golf destination in B.C. Within a 45-minute drive, there are great courses like Tobiano, Sagebrush and Talking Rock. Predator Ridge, near Vernon, is about 90 minutes away. All are top-10 golf courses in B.C., and so would be Kamloops’ Rivershore if someone harvested the rough, which at least would allow revered archi- tect Robert Trent Jones to rest in peace. Lulay and quarterback Jonathon Jennings played spectacular and difficult Tobiano, above Kamloops Lake, before training camp opened. “The course won,” Lulay said. They’ll try to get out again next week when camp is reduced to one workout per day. “I can dab it out there pretty good, 350 yards-plus,” Adcock said. “It loosens my hips, shoulders. I don’t have much soreness anymore (from football) because of golf.” He said most people are surprised that someone so big is flexible enough to make good swings, which helps Adcock make a little money on the side. “I want to see Levy play,” Lulay said. “I know there’s potential in a big man to swing it smooth; I just want to see it.”
