Manchester leads SAG nominations

Screen Actors Guild awards can hint at which films are Oscar choices

- LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

La La Land hit all the right notes for the Golden Globes, but the Screen Actors Guild sung a different tune Wednesday, when Kenneth Lonergan’s New England-set family drama Manchester by the Sea picked up the most nominations, with four.

Barry Jenkins’s coming-of-age tale Moonlight and Denzel Washington’s August Wilson adaptation Fences followed with three each. They’re competing with factbased NASA film Hidden Figures, starring Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer, and family drama Captain Fantastic, with Viggo Mortensen.

Shut out of the ensemble award was Damien Chazelle’s musical La La Land, which scored nominations only for its leads, Emma Stone and London, Ont.-born Ryan Gosling.

In the past, SAG nominees have served as predictors of who will land nods in the four Oscar acting categories. The awards will be handed out Jan. 29 in Los Angeles.
