INVISIBLE NORTH: THE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS ON A TROUBLED RESERVE
Alexandra Shimo Dundurn Press
Q Why did you write this book?
A Philosopher George Santayana once said, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” We are at a unique period of history, at a crossroads between the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Canada’s 150 anniversary. And yet, living in Kashechewan, a troubled reserve in northern Ontario, I not only witnessed the appalling conditions, but discovered that so much of indigenous history is left out of the official record and the history books. I believe those stories are important to understanding who we are as a nation and what is necessary to move forward.
Q What is the one thing you want readers to learn from your book?
A The power of hope in what often seems like a hopeless situation.
