A MONTH OF FUNDAYS
From Star Trek to ancient artworks and great food, Seattle Museum Month a feast for cultural senses
It’s the shortest month of the year, making the challenge all the more, well, challenging.
That would be visiting all the museums and art galleries participating in the annual cultural bingevisit that is Seattle Museum Month.
The math is daunting: just 28 days to take in the exciting exhibits and diverse displays at 41 venues.
This February marks the third year Seattle tourism officials and hotel operators have joined forces with museums and galleries in the Emerald City area to offer halfprice admission to guests staying at participating hotels.
Here’s a look at some of this year’s highlights:
DIVERSITY RULES
Dive into the city’s cultural diversity at the Tabaimo: Utsutsushi Utsushi exhibit at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, Do You Know Bruce Lee: Year 3 at the Wing Luke Museum, or Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts at the Northwest African American Museum.
POP GOES THE CULTURE
The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) at the Seattle Center is loaded with music paraphernalia and has become a hub for science fiction and pop culture enthusiasts. Through Museum Month, Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds will be celebrating the iconic sci-fi series’ 50th anniversary.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITY
For some fresh air between museums, stroll through Volunteer Park and Olympic Sculpture Park.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If you’ve been to Seattle, you know it’s a foodie town, and the Edible City: A Delicious Journey at the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) chronicles the city’s favourite foods and culinary history.
FAMILY TIME
You might not think of live animals when you think of museums, but the Woodland Park Zoo is part of the program, and this is a particularly good time to visit with the recent arrival of Yola, a baby gorilla.
TECH, PLANES AND AUTOMOBILES
There’s no shortage of exhibits reflecting the history and progress of science and technology.
More than 175 aircraft and spacecraft structures, as well as thousands of photographs and artifacts are displayed at the Museum of Flight, the largest independent, non-profit air and space museum in the world. Explore the elements of aviation at the Flying Heritage Collection and roll back in time with the classic cars of the LeMay Family Collection.
