HORSE SHOE BAY WEST VANCOUVER CELEBRATES WEST COAST MODERNISM

- JODIE WARREN POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

Westbank’s Horseshoe Bay West Vancouver is resonating strongly with West Vancouverites, with the majority of homes in the four-building condominium development purchased by local residents and workers.

The project is the result of a visioning process that began in 2009 by the Sewell family, which has owned the marina for four generations; architect Paul Merrick, and Westbank, developer of Shaw Tower, Shangri-la Vancouver, Woodward’s, Fairmont Pacific Rim, and TELUS Garden.

“True luxury is deep, holistic and authentic. It is lasting and complements natures. It does not try to compete with it but rather embraces it,” says Ian Gillespie, principal of Westbank. “At its roots, the architectural genre known as West Coast Modernism represents these values. Working with Paul Merrick in West Vancouver, the birthplace of this important contribution to architecture, is a wonderful opportunity for Westbank to showcase these values — a celebration of beautiful architecture that embraces healthy living and community.”

When complete, the project will consist of four terraced residential buildings in a ring with small-scale ground-level commercial. The jewel in the project will be Paul Merrick’s boat house with its soaring parabolic arches. The boat house will be home to a top end Corsair 25 powerboat by Chris-Craft that will be available for pleasure cruise bookings by the residents of the project.

“One of the most memorable experiences in boat houses is the way that they let light in and reflect it onto the water,” says Michael Braun, Westbank’s marketing director. “Paul Merrick’s design ensures the boat house will glow like a lantern by night, becoming a landmark for the entire harbour .”

Horseshoe Bay’s interiors and architectural details continue a bold tradition of total design in West Vancouver. Travertine graces the hearths of gas fireplaces, a feature rarely found in condominiums. Kitchens will incorporate wood-panel ceilings and elements to recall the forested surroundings ceilings, and come with exquisite glass fused countertops and contemporary satin brushed metal and glass backsplashes available in copper, gold, bronze and zinc finishes. Another distinctive element: over-height, extra-wide, solid-oak suite entry doors.
