Spread your wings and fly
I have the privilege of training the wonderful volunteer leaders who guide and support participants in the SportMedBC RunWalk — Vancouver Sun Run InTraining clinics around B.C.
I was recently inspired by a new leader who had joined a RunWalk clinic years ago as a participant, and then developed a new-found confidence in herself as a result of her success with the program. She lost a significant amount of weight, changed her career, got out of a bad relationship and is now a bundle of energy.
I was recently up north in Greenville, where more than 50 people will be following this RunWalk program in the snow, sleet and cold. While there, I saw an inspiring painting of a gorgeous eagle flying high over water amid the mountains. The caption read: “Leadership. Until you spread your wings, you’ll have no idea how far you can fly.” Our journey has just begun.
Walkers: Swing those arms with
a strong heel-toe action in your foot plant.
Learn To Runners: Have a tight, short swing of the arms with elbows bent at 90 degrees, very little knee lift and a soft landing on your midfoot under your hips.
Runners: Take care not to overstride and try not to cross the mid-line of the body with your arm swing.
