Victoria mom found passed out with child in back seat

- KATIE DEROSA

A Victoria mother was arrested for impaired driving Thursday night after she was found intoxicated and unconscious behind the wheel of her car with her child buckled in, in the back seat.

Officers found the woman passed out in the driver’s seat around 9 p.m. in the 100-block of Gorge Road East with the young child in the back, said department spokesman Bowen Osoko.

A passerby noticed the vehicle was running and tried to open the door to help the woman and child, but the doors were locked.

Officers had to break a passenger-side window to get into the vehicle.

“It was then that they noted evidence indicating the driver may be impaired by drugs and alcohol,” Bowen said.

Both the child and the mother were taken to hospital but the child did not have any physical injuries. The woman was released and then taken into police custody.

Charges have not yet been laid.
