SWEDISH CHIC BRAND

Cos’ store in Gastown will offer timeless style and trendy looks

- aharris@postmedia.com ALEESHA HARRIS

Gastown’s cool factor is about to increase (and that’s saying something, because it’s already pretty awesome) thanks to the arrival of Cos.

The Swedish retailer, which specializes in offering reasonably priced garments that boast a heavy Scandinavian influence, is set to join the ever-growing list of unique retailers that call the historic district home. Karin Gustafsson, the creative director for Cos, chatted with Postmedia News in advance of the opening.

Q How would you describe the Cos esthetic?

A Since the launch of Cos in 2007, our philosophy has remained the same; to offer a high-quality collection — from design to fabrics and finishes — at comparably affordable prices. We’ve always aimed to offer an inspiring collection each season, comprised of timeless and func- tional wardrobe staples as well as tactile and modern reinvented classics for men, women and children.

Q How do Cos collections reflect Scandinavian minimalism? And how does this balance with creating trend-focused pieces?

A For me, Scandinavian design is inherently timeless and as an international brand with a Scandinavian heritage, we at Cos have always strived to create collections that are understated rather than showy, functional instead of overly styled and timeless as opposed to seasonal. It’s important to us that our garments can be worn for years.

Q What is the design process for your in-house team?

A In order to bring a sense of newness to our collections each season, we look at so many different and sometimes unexpected sources for inspiration. Everyone in the design team will collect images, books, swatches and all sorts of materials from visits to markets, exhibitions and trips around the world. Once we have collated a large amount of information, we pick themes to develop which we feel are relevant and exciting for the following year.

Q What’s new for spring 2017?

A We always like to explore the unexpected and this season, it’s the parachute.

Q Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?

A This season we really wanted to re-interpret the two-piece, so one of my favourite looks from the collection is the cotton square-fit jacket with matching cotton tailored shorts in pale terracotta. I think this is such a versatile look that can be worn to work in the summer, with friends on the weekend, or even out at night.
