Surrey Central SkyTrain station is about to get a $25-million facelift.

The transit hub, located in Surrey’s city centre area, sees 29,000 riders tap in and out on an average weekday, making it the busiest of the four SkyTrain stations in Surrey, said TransLink media relations adviser Jill Drews on Friday.

In the upgrade, the station will get a new elevator, three new escalators, a new staircase and better lighting, as well as two new entrances at the north side of the station.

The station improvements are expected to improve capacity, accessibility and safety, and make it easier to navigate.

“Transit is an important part of Surrey’s vision for a healthy, sustainable community,” said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner.

“The upgrades to Surrey Central station will help better connect the station to the surrounding neighbourhood, and I am pleased to see this investment in transportation infrastructure in Surrey Central — an investment that benefits residents across the region who travel to and from the station.”

The project costs will be paid for by the federal government ($3.2 million), the provincial government ($6.9 million) and TransLink ($14.9 million).

Construction is expected to start in early April and be complete by the end of 2018.

Surrey Central is the last station to be upgraded under the Expo Line Upgrade Strategy, which called for improvements at seven SkyTrain stations. Upgrades are underway at Metro town, Commercial-Broadway and Joyce-Colling wood, and have been completed at Scott Road, Main Street- Science World and New Westminster.
