The Heydays of May

Whistler offers great deals and outdoor adventure for all

- STEVE FISHER

There’s nothing quite like a spring day in the mountains. Imagine waking up for a few laps on your skis or snowboard, then enjoying an afternoon après on a sunny patio. From there, you might wander the village shops or explore the local trails as you work up an appetite for a gourmet dinner, or relax at one of the many spas. While it sounds like a fantasy, this is just a typical spring day in Whistler. May is that magical month where nearly everything Whistler offers can be enjoyed. The alpine skiing is still excellent, but warmer weather opens up the golf courses, Whistler Bike Park and hiking trails. “May is the month when the seasons converge in Whistler—the days are warmer and longer and you can still ski on Blackcomb, but you can also bike and golf. There are some great deals on accommodation and dining, while GO Fest, on the May long weekend, really signals the unofficial start to summer,” says Tourism Whistler’s Patricia Westerholm. With so many activities on tap, it’s no surprise Whistler has many world-class restaurants to fill you up after an adventurous day. “Indulge in Whistler” is a campaign of dining specials offered throughout the month of May; whether you’re craving steak or lobster, a smorgasbord of sushi or a burger and fries, this is the time to enjoy Whistler’s best dishes at off-season prices. On the Victoria Day long weekend (May 19–22) the fourth annual GO Fest, Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival will offer visitors a huge variety of concerts, activities and experiences. The full line-up of concerts, sporting events, clinics, village happenings, family activities, and arts and culture will be posted on the whistler.com website. Check it out and be sure to mark this weekend on your calendar. As part of GO Fest, the Bici Gusti Gourmet Ride takes seventy road cyclists on a seventy-kilometre course through the scenic Whistler and Callaghan valleys. After the ride, participants enjoy a gourmet dinner prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Despite the endless opportunities for adventure, May also offers great off-season deals including accommodations for as little as $99 per night. Visit whistler.com/ may for more information.
