CLOTHING TIPS & GEAR CHECK

-

Layer your clothing. If you

overheat, peel off the layers. Don’t forget to bring a change of dry, warm clothes for the Wrap Party.

You may use the $5

gear check service to transport your clothes from the start area to the finish zone. Drop your gear until 8:50 a.m. at the trucks, which are parked on all access streets in the start zone. The truck for the red zone will be parked on Howe, not Granville, and will be open until 9:20 a.m. Buses still run on Seymour and Richards on Sun Run morning.

The gear-check tag on your

bib will identify your gear; submit the tag with your gear. Collect your gear at Rogers Arena across from Gate 16 (parking lot near Pacific, Abbott and Carrall streets, east of Rogers Arena). Show your race number to claim your gear.

Do not check valuables and

note that gear check can accommodate only as much as you can cram in the shopping-sized plastic bag. Items left on the street at the start area will be collected by, and donated to, The Salvation Army.

PRE-RACE

Pick up and verify your BibTag at Race Package Pickup. It records the time it takes you to get from start to finish no matter where in the pack you begin. Your BibTag is attached to the back of your race number. Do not remove it.

Attach your race number to the front of your shirt before the race. No BibTag means no results. Do not crumple your race number or damage the BibTag in any way — a crumpled/damaged BibTag won’t work.

RACE DAY

You must wear the BibTag on your race number as provided or you will not be timed. Ensure your race number is clearly visible. The BibTag will not work properly if it is covered with clothing. Make sure if you are wearing “throwaway” clothing before the event that you remove it before crossing the timing mats at the start. You must cross the timing mats at the start and finish lines to receive a finish time. No other timing method will be used.

RACE FINISH

After you cross the finish line, you do not need to return your race number or BibTag — it’s your souvenir. Proceed to the Wrap Party and enjoy.

OFFICIAL RACE PHOTOS

Marathon-Photos.com is the official photographer of the Sun Run.

To view and order your photos, go to vancouversunrun.com and click on “results.” Find your name and there will be a photo icon by your name; click on that and you can view and order your photos.

Please allow for a few days for the photos to be uploaded, as the Sun Run is a large event.

If you subscribe your email address in advance, they will send you a direct link to your images once they are online. For the best photos, participants should have their bib numbers clearly visible — and smile!

SEE YOUR NAME IN PRINT

Look for your result and highlights of the run in The Vancouver Sun on Monday, April 24. Online results will also be available at vancouversunrun.com.

2.5K SHAW MINI SUN RUN

The Shaw Mini Sun Run offers participants a 2.5K fun-filled route that starts at B.C. Place at 777 Pacific Blvd. and finishes back at the start line on Pacific Boulevard.

It’s perfect for those who prefer a shorter route or for families (children 12 and under).

The Shaw Mini Sun Run starts at 8 a.m., with festivities that include music, Tickles and Clown Family, a caricaturist, juggler, mascots, tattoo artists, inflatables and performers to entertain Shaw Mini Sun Runners before and throughout the race.

Check the map on Page D5. The event is not timed, but there will be a clock for those who would like to track their time. Each Shaw Mini Sun Runner receives an individual race bib number and each participant receives a finisher’s ribbon.

Shaw Mini Sun Runners can see their name in print, too. All names will be printed in The Vancouver Sun on Monday, April 24. At B.C. Place, Shaw Mini Sun Runners can replenish spent energy levels with samples from PowerBar, Oasis Juice, Meko Coconut Water, NeuEnergy, Nature’s Path Cereal, Catelli Pasta, Canadian Springs Water and the McCafe Trailer, plus enjoy a variety of fun activities within the Shaw Mini Kids Zone.

If you haven’t already registered for the Shaw Mini Sun Run and wish to, registration is in person only at B.C. Place on Friday and Saturday. There is no race-day registration. Visit vancouversunrun.com for more info.

FINISHER’S CERTIFICATE

At the end of the race, be proud of your accomplishment and commemorate your participation with your own finisher’s official certificate. Simply visit the Vancouver Sun Run website — vancouversunrun.com — on April 23 to download your souvenir certificate and print off your own copy. To download your certificate, find your name on the “results” page and click on the certificate icon.

EASY RIDE TO SUN RUN

If you must drive, you’re advised to arrive by 7 a.m. Street parking in the area of the run is limited (and remember, there is a 30-minute to two-hour limit to metered parking).

A number of streets, both at the start line and along the route, will be closed to traffic during the morning. See the road closures advisory on Page D11 for details. There’s some paid parking adjacent to B.C. Place, near the finish line. Seasoned Sun Runners park near the finish zone and jog back to the start zone.

Sun Runners who plan to cycle to the start line have the option to secure their bicycle with BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation), The Bicycle Valet. Space to park 100 bikes will be available at B.C. Place’s Gate C.

All major TransLink bus services run Sunday morning. SeaBus will sail from Lonsdale Quay at 7:02 a.m. (an hour earlier than normal) and provide a 15-minute service through the morning and early afternoon.

SkyTrain will start service on the Expo/Millennium Lines half an hour earlier than normal, with the first train leaving King George at 6:38 a.m., Lafarge Lake-Douglas at 6:26 a.m., and Waterfront at 7:20 a.m.

SkyTrain will operate “rush hour-level” service during the time prior to the start and into the afternoon, as crowds head home. Once again, Canada Line will start at its usual time of 5:02 a.m., leaving Richmond Brighouse to Waterfront Station, with extra service for incoming crowds starting at 6:30 a.m.

Coast Mountain Bus will have a number of reroutes in effect, taking the buses away from Georgia between Pender and Richards, the West End, Burrard Bridge and 2nd Avenue in Kitsilano. Buses that normally use Georgia will travel along Pender between Cardero and Richards.

Full details on the reroutes may be found online at translink. ca.

West Vancouver Blue Bus will also operate the usual Sunday schedule, but add service between West Van and downtown before and after the run.

Those arriving on SkyTrain can avoid lengthy lineups at ticket vending machines after the Sun Run simply by purchasing two tickets at the station in the morning when they’re coming in and saving one of those tickets for the trip home.

Please move down the aisle to make more room for your fellow Sun Runners if the bus or train is crowded.

Further info on service changes can be found online at translink. ca or by calling customer service at 604-953-3333.

Transit customers will have to pay only a single-zone fare of $2.75 for an adult fare and $1.75 for a Concession fare to travel throughout the entire bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus network. (Concession fares apply to children five to 13 years, secondary school students 14 to 19 years with a valid photo ID, seniors 65 and older with proof of age, and HandyCard holders riding conventional transit.)

False Creek Ferries and Aquabus Ferries will also be running extra ferries on Sun Run morning. Visit granvilleislandferries.bc.ca and theaquabus.com for schedules and fares.

COMFORT AND SAFETY

Watch for washrooms, first aid stations and Canadian Springs water stations along the course, plus there will be Meko Coconut Water at the Walker’s Pit Stop Station. More than 200 medical volunteers and paramedics will travel the course on bicycles. First aid attendants with expertise in sports injuries will follow the waves of runners.

Medical facilities will be located at English Bay, Fir and Fourth and at the finish area with an easy-to-spot medical banner. There will also be a big water station just past the finish line with plenty of water. Plenty of oranges and bananas will be served at the post-race Wrap Party inside B.C. Place Stadium, courtesy of our official produce partners, Whole Cuisine and FreshPoint Produce.

ETIQUETTE

The Vancouver Sun Run is a fun-filled community event and in order for everyone to have an enjoyable and safe experience, consideration of fellow runners, volunteers and race officials is a must.

Please visit vancouversunrun.com for more information on etiquette guidelines as we want to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience.

MEET AT THE Q

If you’re meeting someone before the race, pick a site several blocks away, such as the library, post office or Waterfront station. Avoid the art gallery, Hyatt Regency Vancouver, Hotel Vancouver, Christ Church Cathedral and other landmarks near the start zone as they will be awash with Sun Runners.

Meeting after the race? Go to the A to Z meeting area inside B.C. Place. Determine under which letter you will meet. Team Ziggy might meet under the Z, for example, or the Albatross family under the A.
