Mercedes-Benz previews it’s rounder, shorter next-gen CLA-Class concept

Mercedes-Benz has previewed the next generation of its fast-selling CLA-Class with the new Concept A, unveiled at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show.

The concept is stockier than the current and somewhat ungainly CLA — wider and shorter.

Mercedes-Benz chief of design Gorden Wagener says the new Concept A “shows that the time of creases is over” for the German automaker.

Mercedes is clearly very pleased with the more amorphous shape of the Concept A. The flush door handles are reminiscent of those found on the Tesla Model S, and the nose of the concept is lifted straight from the Mercedes-AMG GT.

Wagener is correct about the lack of defined creases; the front adopts a no doubt more pedestrian-friendly smooth nose and the stubby trunk blends seamlessly with the rear tail lights.

Despite the compact size, 20inch wheels fill the wheel wells.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept A is a good indication of what the next-generation CLA-Class will look like, but Mercedes will likely show a more production-ready version before the next-gen CLA actually launches.
