Last weekend was a wonderful time spent with family.

On Friday my brother, sisterin-law and their three kids helped out on the 7th Annual Centennial Show ‘n’ Shine which, since its start, has raised almost $24,000 to provide scholarships for deserving Centennial Automotive students. My son also showed up and I got to see lots of old friends and a bunch of cars I had not seen before.

Two Mercury convertibles showed up, one owned by the husband of a woman from my neighbourhood. These were large full-sized Mercs, the red one a Parklane and the other only badged as a “Mercury.” The Parklane was the top-of-theline model and the name was dropped in the early ’60s but came back for the 1964 model year.

On Saturday morning we left the house at 7:30 a.m. and made it to Osoyoos at 12:30 after a few stops for coffee and walks for our dog Stella. We are planning a long drive this summer to the Prairies, so this was a shake down run for the dog and she performed admirably. We took the Fiat 500 Turbo and must have looked like doddering old people as we slowly went around corners to protect our precious cargo. It was my first time at the show in Osoyoos and I will definitely go back, though maybe with the old Chevy truck this time.

The standout car to me at the Cactus Jalopies Beach Cruise Car Show in Osoyoos was a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix, powered by the 421-cubic-inch motor topped with the tri-power set of 3x2 barrel carbs. What totally blew me away was the short throw shifter on the close ratio 4-speed manual transmission.

This weekend there is lots to do and lots of racing. Saturday, maybe a journey to Bubba’s show in Abbotsford, then to the races in Mission, and then maybe out to Agassiz. On Sunday I will pop down to the Pontiac show in my backyard, then I’m torn between the great show in Steveston and the Healeys at Deeley’s display that will be part of Trev Deeley’s motorcycle show. One can’t do them all ... but one can try! And, of course, with a kid in tow.
